The heart is not merely a muscle pumping blood around our body but without a doubt a complex system with its own form of intelligence.

Science has uncovered that our hearts contain an intricate network of 40,000 neurons (nerve cells normally seen in the brain), neurotransmitters (chemical messengers), and cells, forming what is known as the “heart-brain.

This intelligence isn’t confined to logic as per the left side of our brain but furthermore encompasses emotional, intuitive, and spiritual qualities that connect us to Universal existence itself.

HeartMath Institute research has demonstrated that different patterns of heart activity (which accompany different emotional states) have distinct effects on cognitive and emotional function.

During stress and negative emotions, when the heart rhythm pattern is erratic and disordered, the corresponding pattern of neural signals traveling from the heart to the brain inhibits higher cognitive functions.

This limits our ability to think clearly, remember, learn, reason, and make effective decisions. (This helps explain why we may often act impulsively and unwisely when we’re under stress.) The heart’s input to the brain during stressful or negative emotions also has a profound effect on the brain’s emotional processes—actually serving to reinforce the emotional experience of stress.

HEART AND BRAIN COMMUNICATION

The brain and heart are always communicating with each other through electrical pulses, chemical signals and energetically.  Most of this communication occurs via the vagus nerve but interestingly research suggests that the heart sends more signals to the brain about us, our emotional state and our surroundings than the brain sends to the heart.

“The vagus nerve, which is 80% afferent, carries information from the heart and other internal organs to the brain. Signals from the “heart brain” redirect to the medulla, hypothalamus, thalamus, and amygdala and the cerebral cortex. Thus, the heart sends more signals to the brain than vice versa.”

Quantum Physicist and Noble Prize winner, Nasim Haramein has always affirmed that our heart centre is the gateway to the Universe.

“We all have an amazing gift to present. The heart space is the source of this genius. To go to the heart center is to go to the stillness that connects us all and where all information is present. From there, the brain and the intellect can interpret and apply it in a beautiful way. The heart is the fundamental space for our evolution. The heart is the place from which our society will transcend our current difficulties.”

THE ENERGY OF THE HEART GOES BEYOND THE BODY

We all radiate out an electromagnetic field, so when we interact with each other, we are exchanging information energetically even before we’ve said a single word.

The electromagnetic field of the heart is 5000 times greater than the brain. On my Reiki course, I learned about research from the Heart Math Institute which found that the the electromagnetic field of the heart goes out at least 12 feet beyond our bodies. They say ‘at least’ because the machine only went as far as 12 feet.

Some teachers and channelers claim that every beat of our heart sends out a spherical, electro-magnetic pulse that connects with every other human heart, travelling 186,300 miles per second (for perspective, it’s approximately 9,300 miles from the UK to Australia).

HOW TO CONNECT TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF YOUR HEART

To connect to your heart and experience its profound insights try the following:

  • Become still
  • Slow down and slightly deepen your breathing
  • Close your eyes or have them softly open
  • Drop your awareness into our heart centre
  • Placing your hands on your chest, notice the movement of your chest beneath your hands
  • Go deeper into your heart-space
  • Be still and simply listen without expectation

When to practice heart brain connection

We can do this several times throughout the day to bring heart / brain coherence which will help us understand ourselves, make better choices and see an expanded perspective of any situation.

More importantly, when we attune to the pulses of the heart we become conduits of love. We not only compassionately and harmoniously align with each other, we powerfully affect the electromagnetic field of this planet. We connect to consciousness and can draw from its infinite wisdom, its infinite light.

By harnessing the transformative potential of heart-centred living and following our bliss, we can transcend limitations, heal our body, heal past wounds, and manifest our desires for the benefit of all.

Each beat of our heart serves as a reminder of our inherent connection to the Universe, guiding us on a journey of self-discovery and evolution.
