Sound healing therapy uses aspects of music to improve physical and emotional health and well-being.

Sound healing traces its roots back to ancient civilisations such as Greece, Egypt, and India. These societies believed in the transformative healing power of sound and used tools such as singing bowls, chanting, and tuning forks to promote a harmonious environment for the body to heal itself.

Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist and philosopher who performed extensive research on the impact of sound waves on the physical matter in the mid-20th century. His research revealed that sound can create intricate patterns in the sand and other substances, leading to the development of sound therapy in modern medicine and the creation of technologies such as ultrasound and sonography.

Don Conreaux, a sound healer and musician, hosted the first sound bath in San Francisco in 1975, using gongs and other instruments to create a powerful and transformative experience for participants.

What is a sound bath?

During a sound bath, a sound healer plays various instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, and chimes while participants lie down or sit comfortably. The vibrations and frequencies of the sounds help to calm the mind and relax the body, allowing participants to enter a meditative state and access their inner healing abilities.

Is it the same as a Gong Bath?

Gong baths are the most known type of sound bath and for a good reason. These sessions involve the use of large gongs, which produce deep and rich vibrations that can be felt throughout the body.

Different Instruments in a Sound Bath

Tibetan singing bowls have been used for centuries in traditional Tibetan medicine for their healing properties. These bowls are made of a special alloy of metals, producing a unique sound that is both soothing and energising.

Crystal singing bowls are another popular form of sound bath, using pure quartz crystal bowls to create sounds and frequencies that promote healing. The bowls are often placed on and around the body, allowing the vibrations to penetrate deeply into the tissues and promote physical and emotional healing.

Drumming has been used for centuries in many cultures as a form of healing and celebration. In sound baths, drums are used to create a rhythmic beat that can be felt throughout the body, promoting deep relaxation and stress relief.

Tuning forks are a unique form of sound bath that uses the precise frequencies of tuning forks to promote healing. The forks are struck and placed on specific points of the body, creating a vibration that helps to balance the body’s energy.
